At a time of deep transformations, Europe is at a strategic crossroads that will define its near and long-term future. Europe needs to honor its commitments to achieve sustainability, while adopting decisive action to regain economic competitiveness and secure social and territorial cohesion. Europe’s ability to boost and diffuse innovation will be key in this process. Despite several strength, Europe still faces significant challenges that hold back its innovation potential in a rapidly changing context. This session will assess the state of play of competitiveness in Europe and present its competitiveness agenda, guided by the Competitiveness Compass, with a special focus on actions aimed at bridging Europe’s innovation gap.
Bilbao Osorio’s presentation will include an analysis of graphics and indicators on Europe’s competitiveness and innovation challenges, as well as an assessment of the Competitiveness Compass agenda.

The Cañada Blanch Centre at LSE sets out to achieve the Fundación Cañada Blanch's goal of developing and reinforcing links between the United Kingdom and Spain. This is done by fostering cutting-edge knowledge generation and undertaking joint research projects between researchers in the United Kingdom and at the LSE on the one hand, and Spain on the other hand.
Beñat Bilbao Osorio
Research and Innovation Counsellor at the EU Delegation to the UK. Prior to joining the delegation, he was a Senior Economist at the European Commission, as well as the Deputy Head of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation team. Before starting his EU career, he was an economist at the International Trade Centre (2005-2006) and at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCDE; 2007-2009). He also served as the Associate Director and Senior Economist at the World Economic Forum (WEF) between 2011 - 2014, and briefly directed the Latin America and Caribbean section at The Economist's Intelligence Unit. He graduated from LSE with a PhD in Economic Geography. He also has a MA in European Studies from Louvain Catholic University (Belgium) and a BSc in Economics and Management from the University of Deusto (Spain).
Andrés Rodríguez-Pose
Princesa de Asturias Chair and a Professor of Economic Geography at the London School of Economics. Andrés Rodríguez-Pose is the is the Director of the Cañada Blanch Centre LSE. He is a former Head of the Department of Geography and Environment between 2006 and 2009. He is a past-President of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI) (2015-2017) and served as Vice-President of the RSAI in 2014. He was also Vice-President (2012-2013) and Secretary (2001-2005) of the European Regional Science Association.
